Look Ahead, But Not Too Far – Challenge Day 18

Look Ahead, But Not Too Far

The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time. – Abraham Lincoln

I’m a huge proponent for planning for the future.  In fact, I think that’s what Sunday’s blog post is also about as well.  As I said, I’m all about looking ahead to the future, but don’t look too far ahead.  It’s always good to have a plan, a road map if you will, of where you want your life to go.  But the look ahead but not too farbest plans, are fluid.  They can handle deviations, kind of like detours on a road trip.  The GPS will say recalculating and you’ll make a couple of turns and be back on your way.

That’s what a life plan has should look like.  When I was thinking about this quote I was thinking about people who decided in elementary school what they were going to be when they grew up, and never ever deviated from that plan.  Sure they may have achieved their goal of being a lawyer, or a teacher, but at what expense?  What did they miss out on by not exploring other options that may be available to them?

So yeah, map out that life plan, and set your goals.  You don’t want to be wandering aimlessly, do you?  Especially not into your future.  To take it slow, take it one day at a time. That’s the best part, you don’t have to figure it all out now!  Look ahead, but not too far ahead!

It Starts With Peace of Mind – Challenge Day 17

It Starts With Peace of Mind

If you want peace, stop fighting. If you want peace of mind, stop fighting with your thoughts. – Peter McWilliams

As much as I’d like to get all philosophical and figure out how we could stop fighting and have peace, that will have to wait for another day.  Today I it starts with peace of mindwant to talk about the inner dialogues we have with ourselves.  Yes I do mean dialogues, because at least with myself, my inner monologues turn into full on fights with myself.  Most of those conversations/fights usually start out with my contemplating doing something that I’m uncertain about, and I’m either trying to talk myself into it, or out of it. I’m usually doing this because I’m not trusting my intuition.

Intuition is pretty cool, and I think we’re all pretty insightful.  But we don’t listen to ourselves the way we should.  That’s where the inner dialogue comes in and we fight with ourselves and destroy our peace of mind. The very best thing we can do for ourselves is listen to that inner voice, intuition, or gut; whatever you want to call it.  Listen to it, and trust it.  Stop fighting with your thoughts, because there is only one way to have happier, more positive you. It starts with peace of mind.

Ignore the Storm, and Enjoy the Sunshine – Challenge Day 16

Ignore the Storm, and Enjoy the Sunshine

If you spend your whole life waiting for the storm, you’ll never enjoy the sunshine. – Morris West

At one point, my life mantra was plan for the worst, but hope for the best.  I hoped things would go my way, but I didn’t expect them to, and I always planned for the worst case scenario.  Guess what?  9 times out of 10, the worst case scenario happened.  Why? Because I was so busy planning for it, ignore the storm and enjoy the sunshinethat I basically made it happen.  Why wait for a storm that may never happen?

I’m not saying don’t have a plan for when things go wrong.  That only makes sense.  But if you spend so much time planning for things to go wrong, and expecting the worst case scenario, you miss all the good things that are happening right now.  It’s wise to bank some extra cash in case there is an unforeseeable emergency, or perhaps have a credit card that is only used for emergency car repairs.  That’s a plan.  Spending every second of every day worrying about those car repairs is bad.  The thing is, life is basically pretty great, and yes sometimes things can go south, but you can’t spend your life worrying about that.  If you waste all your time worrying, you forget to live.  So stop worrying about impending disaster that may never happen.  Ignore the storm, and enjoy the sunshine.

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable – Challenge day 15

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Get comfortable being uncomfortable. That’s how you break the plateau and reach the next level. – Chalene Johnson

Everybody who is comfortable in their own little rut, raise their hands!  I’m betting that a lot of hands were just raised, at least metaphorically.  Even if you want things in your life to be different there is still a sense of security being in your own little world. But if you’re truly serious about get comfortable being uncomfortablemaking changes in your life. you have to be good and ready to step out of your comfort zone.

When you think about changing things up in your life, how does it make you feel?  Do you get that squirmy feeling inside?  Are you comfortable with the thought of change our are you uncomfortable.  Chances are you’re leaning toward the latter, but if you’re truly serious, you need to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Push through it, work past those squirmy feelings inside of you.  You can accomplish anything that you want, achieve anything that you want and be anything that you want.  That power is within you.  You can get to the next level of your life and accomplish great things.  All you have to do is be willing to deal with and work through the feelings of discomfort; step out of your comfort zone.  It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.  Take the next steps toward your new future.

Don’t Worry About What Others Think – Challenge Day 14

Don’t Worry About What Others Think

Don’t worry about who doesn’t like you, who has more, or who’s doing what. – Erma Bombeck

This is so basic that it isn’t even funny, except for one thing.  Just about everybody I know, myself included is more concerned about what other people think of them then they are of anything else.  Don’t worry about what others think of you, or anything else.  It truly doesn’t matter.  The don't worry about what others thinkonly opinion regarding you that matters is your opinion.

I don’t know why we care so much about what others think and why their opinions matter so much.  I hate to think we are so insecure when it comes to ourselves that the opinions of others matter more to us than our own.  If we spent even a quarter of the time we spend trying to conform to the opinions of others focusing on ourselves and liking who we are, we’d be so much happier.  The fact of the matter is, you are special, and I am special.  We’re all special in our own unique and individual ways.  Seriously, who cares what anybody else thinks.  As long as you’re happy with who you are and what you’re doing, that’s all that matters.

Don’t Take it Personally – Challenge Day 13

Don’t Take it Personally

Try not to take things other people say about you too personally. What they think and say is a reflection of them, not you.

People gossip, and people talk trash.  It sucks and it hurts.  I’m not going to pretend otherwise.  We all do it.  We shouldn’t, but we do.  When I say don’t take it personally, I sincerely mean it.  I also know that when it happens, it’s hard not to take it personally, because it’s personal.  It’s about don't take it personallyyou!

I also know this.  When someone is talking about you, it’s a reflection of them, not you.  I’ve noticed that if I’m talking poorly about somebody, the things I am talking about are things I find lacking in myself.  Maybe it’s easier to talk about somebody else rather than look honestly at myself and fix it.  It gives me the chance to do that whole righteous indignation thing, I guess.  So with this blog post, I have two things going on.  I’m going to really try hard to talk about other people.  Instead, when I feel the need, I’m going to take a moment and reflect inward and figure out if I’m really talking about me, and maybe start to work on those things.  And when I know people are talking about me, I’m not going to take it personally.  It’s on them, not on me.  My goal is to work on me, and fix me, and your goal should be to work on you and fix you.  So let them talk and don’t take it personally.

Make it Work or Make it Better – Challenge Day 12

Make it Work or Make it Better

The real winners in life are the people who look at every situation with an expectation that they can make it work or make it better. – Barbara Pletcher

Wouldn’t it be nice if every situation life handed was as perfect, and that all our little ducks were always in their neat little rows?  It would be lovely, wouldn’t it?  However, this is real life, and real life is messy and challenging and far from perfect. And those little ducks, they’re running around all over the place, and chances are we’re running around chasing those ducks. The challenge lies in looking at the situations life hands you and finding a way to make it work or make it better.

It’s not easy, not at all, but when you do it, life is just that much better, and honestly, you’re that much stronger.  I told you earlier this week about the make it work or make it betterwater pipe that burst, flooding my classroom and two of the classrooms below me.  In fact, the entire wing below me has been shut down.  All those classrooms have been temporarily relocated into another wing of the school, and I’m sharing space with another teacher in my program, and that’s what I want to talk about. I love the other teacher in my program.  He’s a great teacher and a nice person, but he and I have totally different styles when it comes to our classrooms .  One is not necessarily better than the other.  His way works for him, and my way works for mine.  They don’t however necessarily work well together.

But that’s our situation for the next couple of months. We are looking our situation with the best expectations.  We are working together to make it work, and we’re actually making it better.  It’s working better for our students for the most part, and while our teaching styles are different, we’re using our differences to highlight our strengths and shore up or weaknesses.  We are making it work and making it better.

Just Try And Stop Me – Challenge Day 11

Just Try And Stop Me

by Tracie

The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.  – Ayn Rand

I am totally loving this quote for a variety of reasons  First, it reminds me of the Queen song Don’t Stop Me Now, and as far as I’m concerned, you can just try and stop menever go wrong with Queen. But more than that, it’s a very powerful quote. If you adopt this mindset, and take charge of your life, you’ll be able to accomplish anything.  Now I’m not saying this quote gives you the okay to ride rough-shod over anybody and everybody.  That’s never acceptable in my mind.  What this quote is saying is that if you have a goal or a dream, go for it.  It’s yours to pursue.  Don’t ask for permission, and don’t wait for someone to come up to you and say, “Hey, you.  Did you want to go grab that dream?  Why don’t you just go for it? It’s okay, I’ll let you.”

The first step in the process is to figure out what it is you really want.  Dream your dream, set your goal, and craft the path you’re going to  take to get it.  Don’t expect somebody to hand it to you. No, if you want something, it’s up to you to reach out and grab it with both hands. Don’t wait for someone to hand it to you, and more than that, don’t let anybody stop you.  If you want it, and you’re willing to work for it, then you will get it.  It’s up to you.  Don’t let anybody get in your way. If they try, harness your power, take control and say ” Just try and stop me!”

Create Your Own Life Story – Challenge Day 10

Create Your Own Life Story
by Tracie

The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.
– George Bernard Shaw

How often do you find yourself complaining about life? You’re not happy with your job, relationship, or the way things are going at home.  So what do Create your own life storyyou do about it?  If you’re like me, you complain vociferously, lol.  I think, most of us tend to do that.  We complain, and react to what is happening.  Instead, we should be proactive.  There is a simple solution, though.  If the circumstances of your life aren’t to your liking, change them.

There are so many things you can do to change your circumstances. You can end a relationship that doesn’t bring you pleasure, or if you don’t want to end it, put some effort in with the other person and make it better.  If you don’t like your job situation, change careers.  Take some classes, increase your skill set and look for something different. It’s not rocket science.  All it takes is some forward thinking, and the biggie – courage!

Don’t sit around waiting for things to get better.  Don’t sit around waiting for someone to fix it for you.  It’s not up to anybody else, it’s up to you to change the circumstances. Make them get better.  Do whatever you need to do to change the circumstances.  Don’t wait for the circumstances you want to find you. Be proactive instead of reactive. This is your life, it’s your story. Don’t let anybody else be the author, create your own life story.

Learn, Prepare, Live – Challenge Day 9

Learn, Prepare, Live

by Tracie

The past is behind, learn from it. The future is ahead, prepare for it. The present is here, live it. – Thomas S. Monson

Yesterday was a very rough day. It was the first day back to school after my classroom, and the ones below me were flooded by a broken pipe.  I spent a lot of time this weekend, and yesterday beating myself up over what happened, and what I could have done to prevent it. Logically I know there isn’t learn, prepare, liveanything I could do to prevent what happened, I can only do two things.  I can live with the difficult situation that is school right now, and I can do what I can to make sure it happens again.  For me in that situation it means speaking up louder when I see something that could be a bad situation.

The past is over, the only think you can do is learn from it. Look at what happened, figure out how and why, let it go and then move on.  The present is here, right now, and it’s our duty to live in it as fully and completely as possible.  In fact, we should celebrate it.  But while you’re celebrating, don’t forget the future is still coming, and while you shouldn’t obsess over it any more than you should your past, you should still prepare for it.  Have a dream, a plan and a goal, and use the present to help you achieve it.

Today is day 9 of the positivity challenge.  I hope you’re enjoying it.  Share your positive thoughts in the comments, or on facebook or live journal.
