What’s Been Going On

V=Back in December, I got sick. I thought it was just a sinus infection. The doctor gave me meds and it went away. All was well in my world, or so I thought. Less than a month later, the sinus infection along with a horrible cough was back. The doctors were reluctant to give me another antibiotic, which I get, because they don’t want to over prescribe. They gave me cough medicine with codeine, and Benzonatate, neither of which did jack for my cough.

I was miserable, people I work with were sick of listening to me cough all day long, and my family was over hearing me cough all night long. Back to the doctor I went and they decided that another antibiotic was indeed in order. Again, it worked and all was well in my world.

Until the cough came back with a vengeance. Nothing was touching this cough. I ate cough drop after cough drop, I tried using a neti pot, over the counter cough remedies and home remedies. And still my cough remained, so back to the doctor I went.

They decided that the best course of treatment was a steroid, coupled with a chest x-ray. My chest had been clear all through this, but they just wanted to make sure. So I took the steroid and I had the chest x-ray. It was a miracle, the steroid worked and my cough went away. But then the call came – my lymph nodes were enlarged and they wanted to do a CAT scan.

So I scheduled the CAT scan and had the necessary blood work done for that – or so I thought. The phlebotomist who drew the blood did a crappy job and I had a bruise and a lump on my arm that could probably be seen from outer space. My students kept asking who bit me, it was that bad. I also got my cough back which resulted in another round of steroids. And as I found out the day of the CAT scan, she didn’t run the right tests. I was ready to walk out then and there because I did not want more blood drawn, but the nice tech at the CAT scan place drew some blood before she hooked up the IV I needed and ran the test really quick.

The cat scan was painless and done very quickly and the results came fairly quickly as well. Yes my lymph nodes were enlarged and my doctor referred me to someone for a biopsy. Now I was starting to get scared. They were tossing out words like lymphoma and another word I had never head of, sarcoidosis. My doctor sent me to another doctor. I went for the appointment and the next thing I know they’re escorting me to another doctor in the hospital who wants to see me right away. “But don’t worry, nothing is really wrong,” they said. “We’re just going to walk you right over there.” Yeah, that freaked me out. I met with the nice doctor and he decided that the biopsy was going to be done next week. “It’s not really a big deal but we want to get it done right away.” Sorry, but all this stuff happining fast screamed big deal to me, but hey, what do I know, right? Anyhow, the biopsy was scheduled and I was quietly freaking out.

I had the biopsy, and the doctor told me I’d probably get the results in 5 to 7 days. I also got another a funnerific cough courtesy of the endoscopy tube shoved down my throat. I was quite surprised when the doctor called me the next night to give me the results. I was confident all along that it wasn’t lymphoma, and I was right. But it is sarcoidosis. He also heard my delightful cough and prescribed another round of steroids. I should be ballooning up like Violet Beauregard from Willie Wonka fame any time now.

After I got my new script filled, I did what any other person in my position would have done. I took to the interwebs to find information. I went to intelligent sites like Mayo Clinic and Web MD but then I made a HUGE mistake and I turned to facebook and looked for support groups. I thought I would find a lot of information from people dealing with the same thing, and there was some good information, but there was also a lot of poor me and boo hoo and I’m so miserable. I get it. I really do. I’m feeling all whiney and boo hooey myself, but I refuse to get in a funk about this. I’m a huge proponent of positive thinking, and I do believe that your mental outlook can go a long way toward repairing your body.

So where I stand right now is in a sea of uncertainty. I don’t know who I’m supposed to be seeing for treatment, I don’t know what type of sarcoidosis I have – apparently there are many different types. I don’t know anything other than I’m on a steroid. I don’t like not knowing anything, but that’s where I am right now. I guess I’ll be reaching out to my doctor to find out what is next in this process of healing and getting this disease into remission. I’ve been slacking a bit on my diet, my doctor actually said just to wait until I got the biopsy dealt with and school was out, because my stress level has been sky high. She didn’t see any point in worrying about keto and macros and all that because I was just stressing out more.

I know that eating healthy will be good and exercising is good, and eliminating stress is also good. However, it’s hard to exercise when you are coughing up a storm, and stress, well I’m a magnet for stress, but I’m still going to try. It’s small baby steps. Like I’m not doing serious keto and I’m not counting macros, but I’m not going to eat french fries and potato chips all day every day. I can’t do hard core exercise right now, but I can walk, and if I have to stop and cough, so be it. As far as the stress goes – I really just need this school year to be done. That is a big part of my stress right there for reasons I won’t go into here, but anyone who knows me knows what I’m talking about!

2. Daily meditation

In a world that is a storm of chaos and stress, your best weapon can be the calm you carry within. Though it may seem buried deep, each and every one of us possesses this serenity which can ward of evil. All you have to do is tap into this power with meditation. By searching deep within yourself, you’ll come to realize many things about who you are and how and why you react to things.

Daily meditation will help you relax more easily and deal with every challenge daily life throws at you. Your subconscious is your friend, and mediation can help you unlock this friendship and use it for good. You will become a steady rock, unmovable in the storm, unwilling to break, and strong enough to get through any issue you may face.

3. Healthy eating

The path to optimal health can’t be achieved without proper nutrition. What you put in your body greatly affects your cognitive function, as well as your other bodily functions. How vital and healthy you are, depends mostly on the kind of things you put into your body.

Australians have taken this a step further, as they realized each person can have different dietary preferences that work for them best. This belief is so widely spread, that you can even find a Sydney wellness center which offers meal planning services through naturopathy. Though some may regard it as a pseudoscience, naturopathy can have real and positive results. When used correctly, it is the number one thing that helps you understand how your body processes food. Thanks to this practice, many have found peace in nutrition and are now living much healthier lives.

4. Positive thinking

Your mind is like a garden, there are flowers and weeds. The flowers represent the positive thoughts you have about yourself and your environment, while the weeds are the negative thoughts which have the potential to eat away your beautiful mind garden. In order to have a healthy mind, you’ll need to focus on getting rid of the weeds.

Finding positive things about yourself and the world you live in is more of a skill than anything else. You’ll need to work hard to see the bright side, but the more you do it, the easier it will become. Until finally, one day, your primary response to a situation will be an optimistic view. This is how you’ll know that your mind garden is flourishing with the most beautiful flowers taking center stage.

As Louise L. Hay once said: “Loving ourselves works miracles in our lives.” However, loving yourself requires effort, not just words. It may seem challenging though, especially considering how hectic our lives can be. Juggling with work, family, and many other obligations can leave us neglecting ourselves. It’s time to change the game and give yourself some much-needed TLC. It doesn’t require any groundbreaking transformations. On the contrary, adopting these few self-care habits will give you a healthy body and a healthy mind.

1. Getting started.

Self-discipline is the key when it comes to physical activity. Most of us make the decision to start exercising rather easily, but when it comes to putting it to practice, well… it’s another story. A good idea is to make a workout schedule. Keep track of your activities (and energy levels) for a week. This will give you insight into what times work best for you. Our energy levels are usually highest in the morning so that would be a good time for more intense workouts. However, if you see it as a way to vent out after a busy day at work then you’ll dedicate time to it in the evening. Take baby steps and be realistic when making your schedule. This will help you to stay focused and motivated.

2. Make your home gym-friendly.

For some people, taking trips to the nearby gym can sometimes be discouraging. If you are one those people who aren’t keen on working out with a bunch of strangers, don’t give up just yet. A great alternative is to bring a gym to your home. You can make some room in your home or a garage and turn it into your own private gym. Next, you’ll need to put in some Cyberfit gym equipment or similar high-quality fitness items. If you do your research, you’ll find that many shops offer great home gym packages. This way, you’ll enjoy exercising in the privacy of your own home and ensure good physical and mental health.

3. Moody no more.

No matter the intensity of the workout, people generally feel better after a workout. Many studies have shown the connection between physical activity and better mental health. One of the reasons is that physical activity produces endorphins or so-called “feel-good” chemicals. What’s more, it increases blood flow to the brain and lowers the blood pressure and cholesterol. It reduces stress and helps you sleep better. Exercising regularly indeed does wonders for your brain. Better concentration and increased cognitive functions are just some of the benefits physical activity has on your brain. In the end, boosting your energy levels you’ll boost your mood, too.

4. Give your self-esteem a boost.

Taking care of your body is maybe the easiest way to love yourself. Aside from the numerous benefits exercising has on your overall health, it also makes you look good. And by doing that, your confidence levels increase. If you’re persistent, the results will be your biggest motivation and not only that. If you used to have chronic pain in your neck or lower back, you’ll be thrilled to find out that sitting all day at the office isn’t a nightmare anymore. Yes, working out will strengthen your core muscles but it will enhance some other skills of yours. Mastering self-discipline at the gym will transfer to work, and healthier mind means better productivity, too.

5. Stay motivated.

Staying on point with your workout routine may not always go so smoothly. There will be days when even getting up in the morning seems like a challenge. If that happens, try not to avoid your workout completely. Alter it, adjust its intensity to your current state, but don’t skip it. Even a short walk or a bike ride can elevate your mood. Having the support of your family and friends can help you stay motivated. However, it’s best to learn how to do that by yourself. Not only will this bring you independence, but it will also boost your self-esteem and mental health. Stay persistent and whenever you feel like you’re about to fail, remembering the reason you started will keep you going.

Other people may not always be there when you need help and support, but the only person that actually matters will, and that’s you. Loving yourself doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. Taking care of your body can be a fantastic start that will lead to a leaner body, better mood, and most importantly – sharp and healthy mind.

What Exactly Is Enlightenment?

Have you ever wondered exactly what does the word Enlightenment mean?  Well, personally I’ve only had a very brief taste of the enlightened state through a Samadhi experience that I was blessed with in 1995.  The one thing I can tell you that enlightenment is something that cannot be put into words. Yet, if I could describe it, I’d say it is the continuous realization of the divine Universally interconnected omnipotent omniscient omnipresent being you truly are.  Wow, that’s quite a mouthful for something that has no words for it.  Yet, when you meditate on this thought and begin knowing it as the Truth of who you are, an amazing enlightening experience begins downloading directly into your consciousness at the speed of light.

In my brief experience of enlightenment, the first thing I realized was that it happens to you as fast as light and comes directly to you from fully living in the Lightness of your own spiritual presence.  Although most people don’t take the time to redirect their attention on their infinite spiritual nature, so they may not think it is real or that they can experience it at all.  I must tell you that IT IS VERY real, and creates an experience of reality which you cannot compare to anything you’ve ever had before! It’s as if you were living in a dark candle lit musty closet for 25 years and suddenly found the door to walk outside and breathe the fresh spring air and feel the warm radiant light from the Sun!

The enlightening experience is not something you can measure with any scientific device (not just yet), rather it is the experience of the perpetual effulgence of your soul’s radiant awareness. It is seeing this world only through pure awareness, where there are no opinions, judgments or mind chatter in the way. When this happens you discover something that turns your entire life around.  You realize that who you really are is a mind stopping experience.  You are indescribable, unattainable, and exist far beyond the imagination of this limiting mind. 

If you want to have a momentary taste of what enlightenment is, you must do something completely radical with how you’re typically spending your time.  Stop whatever agendas you currently have with your life, let go of everything you thought to be real or true, and entertain the possibility that who you are is an undefinable infinite being, an eternal soul that was never born and thus will never ever die.  By taking this dynamic leap in your consciousness into letting go of all limiting ideas about yourself, you’ll soon find the enlightened state blossoming within you.

Don’t let this idea that your personal problems and life issues are blocking you from enlightenment. Think of them like particles of sand between our toes, depending how you move through life they will either grind or massage your feet. The most challenging people in your life are also your greatest teachers in disguise.  Simply take the approach to explore every experience in your life with a genuinely open mind and childlike curiosity. Stick to this like super glue and you’ll eventually become enlightened.  Life has an incredible wisdom to download into your consciousness that’s bigger than what you can conceive of.  This entire World is designed to enlighten you, heal you, empower you and dissolve “you” (your ego).

Many people wonder, What does an enlightened being understand that other people don’t?  Well, they simply see how everything is connected to a cosmic intelligent web of energy, love and information that physically exists in between every atom in this Universe.  An exponentially increasing flow of deep inspirational insights happens with every thought which passes through.  It is unimaginable, yet the moment you let go of this small limiting identity who you’ve been conditioned to believe is “you”, and dive deeper into trusting this omnipresent intelligence, your inner “light” switches on. You’ll know it because your body becomes deeply relaxed, and your mind becomes supremely empty, soft and receptive to every possible experience that flows your way.

The journey towards enlightenment is a constant celebration of life. Living every moment with the recognition that you are intimately connected to a power that is so great, so intelligent and loving that you wouldn’t trade it for all the diamonds, gold and money on this planet. This living, breathing, highly conscious intelligent energy is all-powerful, and it is always flowing through you.  It is around you, instantly available to you, and loves you unconditionally.  Enlightenment is fully surrendering to this truth everyday, everywhere you are.

Nothing ever happens by accident in this enlightened Universe. There are no coincidences in the enlightened being’s understanding of life.  Even your decision to read this article is not an accident.  Every experience is always the “right” experience for that moment in our journey.  Life is the perfect teacher.  How can an infinitely intelligent Universe ever make a mistake?  Every lesson your soul came here to learn is being provided for you through each breath and experience that you are given. Your spiritual path into enlightenment is your path home.  The Universe is constantly here guiding you, helping you to remember and re-awaken the realization of your awesome true radiant Self.
