When I was a few years out of college and stuck in a dead-end job – I was contemplating going back to graduate school to be a Guidance Counselor.  I knew I wanted to be a Guidance Counselor, but the process of getting there was a bit overwhelming. 

 

I was living in an apartment by myself, working 2 jobs and discovered that I would need to do a 600-hour unpaid internship.  It was so overwhelming to look at the big picture –  because all I could think about was what could go wrong.  How could I possibly take a 6 month long unpaid full-time internship while paying rent? 

 

That’s the question I was living in and that’s the question that stopped me from moving forward for so long.

 

When I was finally able to start living in a different question, I discovered how to move forward.  I wanted it to be a possibility, I wanted to make it happen and I knew that others made it happen.  If others made it happen, why couldn’t I?  

 

So, I started asking different questions.  Rather than focusing on how it couldn’t work, I started working with a solution focused approach –

 

“If I believed it were possible, and if I believed I couldn’t fail, what would I do next?” 

 

That question opened up a whole new world of possibilities.   I stopped focusing on how I would fail and started focusing on what it might look like if I succeeded.  That was such a cooler place to be…

 

What I would do next, was easy.  I started the application process and took my first class.  Easy.  Then my second class, then my third class.  As I began to get further into the program, I decided that I loved my classes, I couldn’t wait to be a Guidance Counselor!  Nothing was going to stop me at that point. 

 

I moved from “what if I can’t?” to “what if I can?” Two questions – two completely different results.

 

As the internship grew closer I dropped my full-time job – I found an apartment for $350/month and my waitressing job seriously saved my ass!  I got through my internship and got a job as soon as I finished. 

 

I focused on the possible success, not the possible failure. 

 

If I had started with “I could never do that” then I never would have.  I would be stuck in my routine world of comfort – but not awesomeness.  We need to remember to live in awesomeness – this life is too short for routine and mundane.

 

Change your language and your mind will follow.  Ask yourself different questions, live in a world of “what if I succeed – what would that look like?”, not “what if I fail”…because if you live the question “what if I fail”, you’ll never move from where you are today.  If where you are today is awesome, then cool – hang out there.  For too many people…it’s not awesome YET.

Learning and Doing

I love to learn.  I seriously do.  I’m not to big a fan of homework and projects and papers and such, but the learning – I LOVE it. As a teacher, I have to go to workshops and take classes to keep my certifications current, so I get to indulge my love of learning.  However those aren’t always the topics I want to study.  This summer, I took a math class for several reason.  First, I can use it toward my certification renewals, but also, I am really horrible at math, and this class helped me and will allow me to help my students.  So while I got to indulge my love of learning, it still wasn’t a topic that I had a burning passion to learn more about, and I had to shell out some serious money to pay for the college class.  Paying isn’t necessarily a negative, but it can get rather expensive.

I needed to find a place where I could indulge my love of learning without breaking the bank, AND have an opportunity to learn about things just for the fun of it.  There are night classes offered during the school year at a neighboring school district, and I’ve done a couple of those.  I also discovered Udemy  If you want to learn about it, Udemy is the place.  They have classes on EVERYTHING.  If personal development is your thing, you can find a plethora of classes to take.  I’m currently taking a class called Hacking Your Subconscious Mind, and it’s fantastic.  It helps you to unlock the power of the subconscious mind, and the instructor Brandon Leal presents the content in a manner that is straightforward and easy to understand.  I’m loving it, and honestly, I think it the information provided applies to everybody!  I’m also taking a class on writing just because it’s something that I love to do and it’s a skill I want to improve.

But the cool thing about Udemy is the sheer variety of courses that they offer.  From music, to business, photography to academics, science to marketing and so much more.  Don’t just take my word for it, visit Udemy and explore the courses.  I can almost guarantee that you’ll find something to interest you.  And the best part of it?  These courses are self paced, so there is no pressure to get it done in a certain amount of time.  As I said earlier, I love learning, and I truly believe that it learning should always be a part of our lives.  Thanks to Udemy, it can be.  If you check it out, drop a comment below, I’d love to hear what you found and explored on Udemy!

I resolve…

Not to make any resolutions for 2015.  I never ever follow through,  so why set myself up for failure?

I’d like to say that I resolve to lose 100 pounds, eat healthier, blog every day, keep on top of paperwork at work, and finish my novel.  I’d like to say that I resolve to be a better person, to volunteer more and to help those who are less fortunate than I.  I’d like to say that I resolve to only think positive, to find the bright side, and to believe in myself at all times.

However, as I said, I never follow through with my resolutions.  What I am going to do is to TRY to be a better person, and most importantly, I am not going to beat myself up if I don’t do these things.

I’m not perfect, I’m a work in progress, and I hope I keep progressing in the right direction.

Four Simple Steps to Success

That may sound overly simplistic, but it’s true. Just four simple steps will guarantee success in any aspect of life.

All you have to do is…

  1. Know what you really want (your goals)
  2. Take action towards your goals
  3. Notice what results you’re getting
  4. Correct your course whenever you notice things are not working

Of course like any great spiritual truth, knowing the steps is easy. Living them… not so much. For example: How do you figure out what you really want? And what if you’re finding it difficult to take action? Or even worse, taking the wrong kinds of actions towards your goals?

My personal experience is that the above steps correlate with very specific aspects of our development.

  1. Knowing your desires comes from self awareness
  2. Taking action happens naturally when self-sabotaging subconscious blockages have been removed
  3. Noticing results comes again from self awareness
  4. Correcting course happens naturally when self-sabotaging subconscious blockages have been removed

In other words, you can sum up success into two basic principles:

Cultivate self-awareness and remove subconscious blockages that cause you to sabotage your own best-efforts.

 

What is Helplessness – Chris Cade

Nobody likes to feel helpless. It is probably most frequently avoided human emotion. People push themselves beyond their limits as well as fall into deep depression just to avoid feeling helpless.

The thing about it is this…

Helplessness, like all other difficult emotions, is a gateway to deeper wisdom and greater inner freedom.

Sure it may not seem like that. After all, we try to avoid it! But it’s only when we stop avoiding our feelings of helplessness that we can discover those inner gifts contained within.

Here’s how I define (REFRAME) helplessness:

“Helplessness is a sign that your Inner Critic believes you ‘should’ do more than the Universe needs you to do in a particular situation.”

But That’s Not Spiritual – Chris Cade

I can’t count the number of times in the past that I’ve thought to myself something wasn’t “spiritual.” In my case, a lot of it had to do with work and not getting enough sleep.

I didn’t think that working could be spiritual (after all, it’s just money, right?). When I had really bad sleep problems and insomnia, I didn’t think sleep was “spiritual.” Sleep was just another thing on the “to do” list in my already too-few-hours in a day.I

thought my job was separate from my spiritual life. I thought that what I ate, how I ate it, and whether I exercised was physical (NOT SPIRITUAL).  I believed my friendships and relationships weren’t spiritual. And the reason I thought those things weren’t “spiritual” is because they didn’t fit into my idea of what was spiritual.

I only considered things like “meditation” or “seminars” or “workshops” to be spiritual. If I wasn’t doing those things, then whatever I was doing was not “spiritual.”

I was always separating in my mind, heart, and in my life, what was spiritual from what was not. And whether we realize it or not (I didn’t at the time), this kind of separation is actually quite painful. Most of that pain is subconscious, but it’s still living with an underlying state of pain.

That was a few years ago when I held those beliefs close to my heart.  Fortunately, since then I’ve discovered more about myself and what is spiritual (to me).  In fact, now I can’t separate spirituality from any of those things. Spirituality, for me, includes every moment of every day.

Every breath. Every bite. Every message I share with you. Everything I read. Everyone I meet. Spirituality is infused with everything I do. To be candid, while I know it is infused with all I do, I don’t always consciously recognize it.

That’s my real inner work: to experience that in all I do… to go beyond the concept, beyond the moments of recognition, and enter a state of constant integration with that truth.

“We are not physical beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a physical journey.”

In varying forms, that quote has been attributed to many people. And with good reason. It is ineffective to sit high in a mountain and meditate to feel inner peace, if we can’t bring that peace with us to everything we do. For example, how effective is feeling happy if the only time we feel happy is when we’re NOT living our daily life?

Please keep in mind that this is not a judgment about people, such as monks, who choose a monastic life. We all make our choices about what is right for us. It’s not about “good” or “bad” but rather about what is “effective” or “ineffective” in helping us inscribe the life of our dreams.

What I’m talking about is you and me living where we live. In the cities, suburbs, small towns, fields, farms, everywhere… we have chosen to be “a part” (not “apart”) of our society. That means we have the realities in our life of finances, relationships, and our physical well-being.

I have noticed in my own life that when I am mindful and conscious of my environment, the people in my life, and myself, then miracles happen. I truly am much happier.

Further, once I finally realized the limiting beliefs and lies I told myself about work and financial abundance, I also became much happier. No longer was I saying “work isn’t spiritual” and “money isn’t spiritual.” Instead, I began to see all my work and income earning as opportunities to practice spirituality. I saw them as opportunities to bring my love into everything I do and share it with everyone I meet.

Speaking of “sharing,” I thank you from the deepest reaches of my soul for being a part of my spiritual journey and for honoring me with the privilege of being of service to you. I hope that you have a delightfully “spiritual” day. 🙂

Old? Get Out! New? Bring it on!

Or phrased another way, “Out with the old and in with the new.” This is the mantra billions of people worldwide have been saying to them as the new year passed from 2011 to 2012.

People have made resolutions to be different than they were. To lose weight, meditate more, save money, work harder, start a new business, start a new relationship, exercise more, judge others less, begin personal transformation programs, and so on and so forth. The list goes on.

What I find interesting is how all this relates to forgiveness. Most people have the idea that forgiveness is something they give to another person. “I forgive you for hurting me” we might say to a friend or family member.

But that’s not true forgiveness. True forgiveness is “out with the old and in with the new.” It is a letting go of what was to make space for what is. Real forgiveness is the opportunity to see what lies here and now without being clouded by the memories of the past. Put in financial terms: “Past performance does not predict the future.”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying to just discard memories. Forgetting means not learnng the lesson. Ignoring the past is choosing to remain ignorant. What I’m suggesting is that we can learn the lessons without carrying the emotional baggage. We can get on the metaphorical airplane and visit new places, see new sights, without having our attention be ‘back home’ so to speak.

This is important when we think about new years resolutions. Are you trying to lose weight because you have emotional baggage about the past? People teased you (or you teased yourself)? Are you trying to earn more money because you’re tired of being poor or disappointing others?

If so, there’s nothing wrong with that. Those are all valid reasons to want change. The thing is, by using the past reasons as justification for future actions, we are choosing not to live in the present moment. We are choosing NOT to forgive. We are choosing to have the past dictate our future.

What if we looked at it through the lens of true forgiveness?

That would mean looking at who and how we are… right now. Exactly right now. Then allowing our heart, mind, and body –together in unison–inform us of what is best for us in the present moment. Maybe you would still try to lose weight or earn money.

The difference is, it wouldn’t be a reaction to the past. It wouldn’t be trying to avoid being who you were or avoiding the experiences you used to have. Losing weight could instead be for the purpose of feeling a greater sense of aliveness and vitality.

The goal of “losing weight” could become “experiencing more physical energy.” Earning more money could transform into the goal of “creating more abundance that I can share with others.”

In other words, by truly “forgiving” yourself, decisions to change would come from a place within you that says “This is what I authentically want… because it’s right, and not because of my troubled past.”

This is a substantial shift. It moves away from a lack mentality of what you don’t want (the past) and into a heart-centered abundant space of what you want to experience more of in your life.

The difference is subtle. Some would call it semantics…

I consider it fundamental.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place pt 2 – Chris Cade

You’ll also be able to more quickly recognize when you’re making sub-optimal decisions, and therefore, correct course more effectively before it’s too late.”
Many times when we are experiencing conflict, our values and integrity are also being challenged. What makes it “a rock and a hard place” is often that two or more things of importance to us are not playing nicely together.

Maybe our parents want one thing, and our spouse wants another.
