Choose Wisely

Who you spend your time with will have a great impact on what kind of life you live. Spend time with the right people. – Joel Osteen

Every time I hear the phrase choose wisely, I think of a specific scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  Indy is with a 2000 year old Templar Knight who tells him to choose wisely.  Fortunately, Indy choose wisely, but do you?  It’s important to choose wisely because the choices we make, and that includes the people we surround ourselves with, says something about us as people.

It’s something your parents probably told you when you were a kid, “People will judge you based on the company you keep.”  Don’t you just hate it when they are right?  Since we all know mom and dad are right and it’s true, we all need to choose wisely. Surround yourself with people who can have a positive impact on your life.  Stay away from those who bring you down.

You know the ones that I mean.  There are some people who are full of negativity.  When you’re around them, they just suck the light right out of you. There are also people who are full of light, and when you’re around them, they fill you with joy.  Choose wisely, surround yourself with people who build you up and fill you with light.

It Happens For You

You’re going to go through tough times – that’s life. But I say, ‘Nothing happens to you, it happens for you.’ See the positive in negative events. – Joel Osteen

I through a huge pity party for myself today. The why isn’t important. What is important is that instead of feeling sorry for myself, I should have been it happens for youthinking of this quote.  One shift in thought, and it’s not happening to me, it’s happening for me.

If I had spent even a tenth of the time I spent feeling sorry for myself shifting my thoughts, I would have had a much better day. Instead I went into full blown poor me mode.  Guess what?  It didn’t make me feel one bit better, in fact, it made me feel one hundred percent worse.  I felt bad, and I felt angry and resentful at the people who were throwing up roadblocks in my life.  But what I should have been doing is realizing that every roadblock was making me stronger and more powerful as I found my way past them.  These roadblocks weren’t happening to me. They happened for me.

But hey, l am not perfect, I make mistakes and now, I’m moving on.  Every mistake is a lesson learned, and I’m going to work to remember it doesn’t happen to me and it doesn’t happen to you.  It happens for me, it happens for you and it happens for us.  We take what life is throwing at us and we use it to grow stronger!

What Will You Choose?

You can live your life angry, bitter, mad at somebody or even guilty, not letting go of your own mistakes, but you won’t receive the good things God has in store.
– Joel Osteen

I shared this quote on facebook this morning, and somebody immediately criticized Joel Osteen for being a crook and having a huge home.  I don’t what will you choosedispute any of that.  I realize that his reputation is slightly tarnished, but I made a choice, I liked the quote and I wanted to share it.  No matter who he is, and what he’s done, there is still a powerful message in this quote.  I made my choice, what will you choose?

It’s a life lesson, in my mind.  You can choose to hang on to anger, jealousy and resentment.  You can choose to hang on to the guilt you’re feeling for something that happened yesterday, or ten years ago. What will you choose?  What will you choose? Will you hang on to all that stuff that is holding you back, or will you let it go and open yourself up to the amazing possibilities of the future?

I’m not going to lie, I am a great one for hanging on to past mistakes.  I beat myself up over things that I did all the time.  I’m also a pro at hanging on to resentment.  I can hold a grudge with a capital G.  But I don’t want to.  I don’t like how it makes me feel, and I don’t like how it holds me back.  So I constantly remind myself to let go.  I made my choice, ,what will you choose?

Look to the Future, Not the Past

There is a great future in front of you, you can leave your past behind. – Joel Osteen

It’s okay to look at where  you’ve been, and to remember the past, but don’t get stuck there.  Don’t live your life thinking about the might have beens.  The future spreads out before us like this great uncharted adventure.  We have the road map that is made by our hopes and dreams and goals, but it is by no means set in stone.  Anything and everything that’s good and great and wonderful is just waiting to happen to you in the future, so head toward it with your eyes wide open and not looking back behind you.
