It’s Up To You

Nothing will work unless you do. ~ Maya Angelou

It’s true.  Think about it at the most basic levels., the tv set isn’t going to work if you don’t turn it on. If you don’t take care of your body with proper care and nutrition, it’s not going to work. It’s up to you to get it done. The other day, I wrote a blog called It Takes Hard Work, and it’s true. Doing anything requires work, and it’s up to you to decide just how much effort and work you want to put into it.

it's up to youI’ve spent a lot of time this week thinking about the changes I want to make in my life.  And I can think about them until the cows come home but unless I do the work, they’re not going to happen. It’s up to me, and it’s up to you.  If you want changes in your life, if you want things to be different, you need to put in the effort, make the changes and get it done

Why am I spending so much time thinking about the changes? Well because I want to make changes. However, I don’t know if I’m ready to put in the effort that is required.  A few years ago, I lost a lot of weight. I just one day decided I needed to do it and I was ready to put in the work. I just did it.  It was my choice, my decision and it was up to me.  I have lots of other things I need to work on, including losing more weight, but I don’t know if I’m ready to do the work.  It’s up to me, and for you, it’s up to you.  Nothing is going to work until you do. All the changes you want to make in your life, all the things you want to do, they’re not going to get done until you decide to do it. It’s up to you.

The Light Within

Nothing can dim the light which shines from within. – Maya Angelou

Usually when I read a quote from Maya Angelou, I’m filled with ideas to write about.  This time, not so much, but I don’t think it’s because of the quote, I think it’s because of me.  I’ve been feeling kind of ambivalent lately, in fact, not only is my inner light not shining, I’m not even 100% positive I have a light bulb in there.  It’the light withins not a great feeling, but here’s the thing.  It’s a feeling I have, I’m acknowledging it, and I’m moving on.  I’m working quite hard to not dwell on the fact that I’m lacking the light from within right now.

These feelings happen, and while it would be great if that light were never dimmed, I have to disagree with Ms. Angelou, the light can indeed be dimmed, but it’s up to us to power through whatever is bringing us down and come out on the other side.  Sometimes we can do it alone, and sometimes we need help.  Right now, I’m in the glumps (gloomy dumps), and to me, I believe it is important to accept your moods, and not deny them.  That seems quite unhealthy to me.  So while I am in this glumpy mood, and my inner light is dimmed here is what I am doing to get out of it.  I’m trying to get plenty of rest, I’m dusting off my feel good play list, I’m re-reading a book that always makes me feel good, and watching episodes of funny shows like The Big Bang Theory.

None of these things are big, nor are they had to do, but they are doing their part to help keep that inner light lit, and I know that in a few days, I’ll be back on track to a more cheerful state of mind, and that inner light will come shining through like a beacon.  So while I love and respect Maya Angelou, I’ll respectfully disagree with her quote.  Sometimes the light within does dim, but you have the power to bring it back to full strength.
