Meditation has been around for thousands of years. Initially, the practice was linked with certain spiritual aspects of some religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. It was used as a technique to help people achieve a higher plane of discipline in the said religion. It has evolved over time, however, with much of today’s discussion about meditation focusing on its benefits upon the wellness of the body and mind. Men and women of science have come out to show the positive changes that the body and mind can undergo as a result of consistent and mindful meditation.

What is Mindful Meditation?

Although there are many different meditation techniques, mindful meditation is one of the best and most effective. The trick here is to focus your mind on your very own experiences and make the conscious decision to focus upon your sensations, emotions, and thoughts in the present. Here the person meditating must be aware of their body and mind, practice breathing techniques for focus, mental imagery and muscle relaxation. When you focus on your experiences, a lot of things that were shrouded before suddenly become very clear.


Benefits of Mindful Meditation

Practicing mindful meditation is quite effective and offers practitioners a wide array of benefits to help nourish the body and mind. Some of these include:


Better sleep

Sleep is a crucial part of our lives. With proper sleep, you are more likely to find yourself in a great mood and feeling well balanced, full of energy and sharp as a whip. When you practice mindful meditation, you are able to clearly see what is keeping you from having a good night’s sleep.  This way, you have avenues to address the problem and achieve better sleep. According to certain research, mindful meditation has even helped older adults with sleep problems improve their quality of life by elevating their quality of rest.


Lowering stress

Stress is one of the few things that can cause us to get sick emotionally and also have a physical manifestation by evolving into other illnesses. Due to the fast-paced lives most people lead, we find that people don’t have an appropriate outlet for their stress. Therefore, it simply continues adding up to the point where everything can devolve and even begin to cause issues like heart disease, obesity, anxiety, and even depression. By practicing mindful meditation, you can actually reduce the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in the body bringing peace and clarity of mind.


Boost productivity

In most cases, the path to success is determined by how productive you are. The more productive you are, the better you perform at work and the better the chances of moving up the ladder. Researchers have found conclusive evidence that mindful meditation does a lot to enable the brain to retain attention for longer periods of time. What’s more, you also find that there is a significant change in executive functioning, working memory, reduced anxiety, and visual-spatial processing. As such, you are able to work for longer and process information a lot better. This will often give you an edge in a competitive environment.

3. Healthy eating

The path to optimal health can’t be achieved without proper nutrition. What you put in your body greatly affects your cognitive function, as well as your other bodily functions. How vital and healthy you are, depends mostly on the kind of things you put into your body.


Australians have taken this a step further, as they realized each person can have different dietary preferences that work for them best. This belief is so widely spread, that you can even find a Sydney wellness center which offers meal planning services through naturopathy. Though some may regard it as a pseudoscience, naturopathy can have real and positive results. When used correctly, it is the number one thing that helps you understand how your body processes food. Thanks to this practice, many have found peace in nutrition and are now living much healthier lives.

4. Positive thinking

Your mind is like a garden, there are flowers and weeds. The flowers represent the positive thoughts you have about yourself and your environment, while the weeds are the negative thoughts which have the potential to eat away your beautiful mind garden. In order to have a healthy mind, you’ll need to focus on getting rid of the weeds.

Finding positive things about yourself and the world you live in is more of a skill than anything else. You’ll need to work hard to see the bright side, but the more you do it, the easier it will become. Until finally, one day, your primary response to a situation will be an optimistic view. This is how you’ll know that your mind garden is flourishing with the most beautiful flowers taking center stage.


There are many aspects of the holistic approach, so you should try to introduce one after another, gradually, to your life. You’re bound to be much happier and more energized, as well as more positive and mindful. Taking care of your body breeds positive effects for your mind. Taking Control of My Life

So Life has spun a little bit out of control for me lately.  I’m a single  parent of 2, count them, 2 high school seniors.  Between all their activities, academics, and the all encompassing college application process, as well as all the things I have on my own plate, it’s safe to say that my life has spun completely and totally out of control.  I’m overwhelmed and I don’t know how to fix it.  Last night was particularly bad for a variety of reasons, and I started out my Monday wondering if I was even going to survive this year, and if I did, would it be worth it.

Well this morning, I had an a blog post to read in my google reader – actually, we won’t even begin to discuss the amount of blog posts because I didn’t check them at all over the weekend.  However, one post from Marc and Angel Hack Life – Practical Tips for Productive Living .  The post was called 12 Unconventional Habits of Highly Productive People.  I was going to just ignore it because I don’t want to be highly productive – at this point, I’ll settle for keeping my head above water.  But I realized that was STUPID, I should be productive, I should be proactive, and not reactive so I decided to give it a read.

I’m not going to lie, it’s a good article and everything in it made sense.  I don’t know if I can incorporate all the suggestions into my life, but I did find one suggestion that I know I MUST incorporate into my life.  Meditation.  The authors talked about meditation and provided a great link to another blog Meditation:  What it Actually is, Why It’s Awesome and How to Actually Get Started that gave some great tips about meditation, what it is, and what it isn’t.

This is something I can incorporate into my life.  More than that, I think it’s something I NEED to incorporate into my life.  Do I think it’s a cure all and fix all for all the stress in my life – absolutely not!  What I do think is that it is a powerful and amazing tool to help me COPE with all the stress in my life.  So I’m going to give it a whirl and see how it goes.  The way I see it, things can’t get any worse than they are, and in fact, it will make things a LOT better.

Harnessing the Power of the Seer – Chris Cade

I really like the word “Seer.” Most commonly, a Seer is defined as somebody (often described as a “prophet”) “to whom divine revelations are made.” In other words, they see what others cannot. World-changing visionaries throughout history have been referred to as “Seers” whenever they predicted the future with a degree of better-than-average accuracy.

But what really enables them to have that capacity? Are some people born more capable of being a Seer than others? Are some of us destined to remain in the dark while others like Edgar Cayce spout off divine revelations in their sleep?

While I can’t answer any of those questions (sorry to lead you on!), what I can say is that I find another definition of “Seer” to be quite interesting:

It’s root is “See.” A “Seer” is anybody who “sees.”

In a literal definition, that’s about eyes. Yet I don’t think anybody would doubt that Helen Keller could “see.” Some might argue she saw better than those people who had eyes. She had to.

Without eyes, her other senses were forced to become much more highly attuned. Her brain had to function in a fundamentally different way so that she could survive, and ultimately thrive, in the world. She had to learn to “See” the world in ways that most of us never will.

So then what really is a Seer and how do you become one?

I like to think of it in the context of our everyday lives. Are we taking a moment to pause and actually SEE what and who is with us? With so many ideas, historical conditioning, and preconcieved notions about reality, we can get lost in the metaphorical dark. We can operate from an automatic conditioned place rather than living in the present moment.

When that happens, we no longer “see” anything. We merely function as a kind of programmed robot. We shift away from human “beings” and operate as human “doings.”

However, when we pause for a moment, when we look around, when we ask “What is this all about?” and when we inquire within “Who am I taking myself to be in this moment?” then we start to SEE again. We literally become “Seers.”

The more that we can do that, the more we transform our lives and consequently the lives of those around us. I find that particularly interesting because it talks to the questions earlier that I have left unanswered.

What if by seeing ourselves and the world more clearly, we inadvertently rengmove the blockages that prevent us from more effectively predicting the future? From predicting our own actions? From predicti the actions of others? Or even opening up to what many people call “intuition,” “hunches,” and “gut feelings?”

The implications of “seeing” are both huge and scary. Scary because we have to realize and accept that for most of our lives, we have not engaged with the world present, aware, and consciously. Scary because we have to admit how far we have strayed from our True Nature and all the power that lies within us.

And it’s huge. It iopens the doorway to change all that and more. Choosing to “See” enables us to live presently, aware, and consciously. It enables us to tap into some incredible power that has laid dormant inside ourselves… just waiting to be harnessed.

Don’t take my word for it. Never take my word for it. Here’s how to try it out yourself:

At some random time today, pause and ask yourself, “What am I seeing right now?”

At another random time today –a time when you’re with somebody else–pause and ask yourself, “Who am I taking myself to be in this moment?”

But That’s Not Spiritual – Chris Cade

I can’t count the number of times in the past that I’ve thought to myself something wasn’t “spiritual.” In my case, a lot of it had to do with work and not getting enough sleep.

I didn’t think that working could be spiritual (after all, it’s just money, right?). When I had really bad sleep problems and insomnia, I didn’t think sleep was “spiritual.” Sleep was just another thing on the “to do” list in my already too-few-hours in a day.I

thought my job was separate from my spiritual life. I thought that what I ate, how I ate it, and whether I exercised was physical (NOT SPIRITUAL).  I believed my friendships and relationships weren’t spiritual. And the reason I thought those things weren’t “spiritual” is because they didn’t fit into my idea of what was spiritual.

I only considered things like “meditation” or “seminars” or “workshops” to be spiritual. If I wasn’t doing those things, then whatever I was doing was not “spiritual.”

I was always separating in my mind, heart, and in my life, what was spiritual from what was not. And whether we realize it or not (I didn’t at the time), this kind of separation is actually quite painful. Most of that pain is subconscious, but it’s still living with an underlying state of pain.

That was a few years ago when I held those beliefs close to my heart.  Fortunately, since then I’ve discovered more about myself and what is spiritual (to me).  In fact, now I can’t separate spirituality from any of those things. Spirituality, for me, includes every moment of every day.

Every breath. Every bite. Every message I share with you. Everything I read. Everyone I meet. Spirituality is infused with everything I do. To be candid, while I know it is infused with all I do, I don’t always consciously recognize it.

That’s my real inner work: to experience that in all I do… to go beyond the concept, beyond the moments of recognition, and enter a state of constant integration with that truth.

“We are not physical beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a physical journey.”

In varying forms, that quote has been attributed to many people. And with good reason. It is ineffective to sit high in a mountain and meditate to feel inner peace, if we can’t bring that peace with us to everything we do. For example, how effective is feeling happy if the only time we feel happy is when we’re NOT living our daily life?

Please keep in mind that this is not a judgment about people, such as monks, who choose a monastic life. We all make our choices about what is right for us. It’s not about “good” or “bad” but rather about what is “effective” or “ineffective” in helping us inscribe the life of our dreams.

What I’m talking about is you and me living where we live. In the cities, suburbs, small towns, fields, farms, everywhere… we have chosen to be “a part” (not “apart”) of our society. That means we have the realities in our life of finances, relationships, and our physical well-being.

I have noticed in my own life that when I am mindful and conscious of my environment, the people in my life, and myself, then miracles happen. I truly am much happier.

Further, once I finally realized the limiting beliefs and lies I told myself about work and financial abundance, I also became much happier. No longer was I saying “work isn’t spiritual” and “money isn’t spiritual.” Instead, I began to see all my work and income earning as opportunities to practice spirituality. I saw them as opportunities to bring my love into everything I do and share it with everyone I meet.

Speaking of “sharing,” I thank you from the deepest reaches of my soul for being a part of my spiritual journey and for honoring me with the privilege of being of service to you. I hope that you have a delightfully “spiritual” day. 🙂

Don’t Just Pay LIP SERVICE to your Affirmations

I have a set of affirmations I say on a daily basis, and with that I have a routine. I usually say them while driving my car on my way to work. On some levels this works great. I have a scheduled set time when I do them, and they get done, but on another level, I discovered this isn’t working out too well. Why? Because I’m focusing, as I should, on my driving, and NOT on my affirmations. I’m NOT feeling them, I’m NOT believing that that is how my life is right now. Instead, I’m going through the motions of saying them as I make my way through the traffic on the highway to work.

Doing my affirmations this way means I’m not manifesting what I truly want as quickly and as effectively as I should. I AM manifesting, but not with the speed I could and should be.

Don’t just pay lip service to your affirmations, visualizations and meditation. Set aside time to focus on them completely with your entire being. You deserve the break, and you deserve to manifest your heart’s desires.
