How to Turn Your Hobby into a Profitable Business

How to Turn a Hobby into a Legitimate Business

Maria Cannon

For many, the idea of starting a small business holds a certain appeal, but the hurdles to actually doing it seem too much to overcome. One of the main hurdles is the question what would I even do? Well, it is possible to do something you enjoy and make money. Turning a hobby into a legitimate business could be just what you need. Here’s how to get yourself set up to succeed.

Decide if it’s feasible to even try

Yes, the first step may sound discouraging. But it’s not – it’s just smart. Do the math. Take a deep dive into your finances and see if it is feasible to start a new business from the ground up. If you need some help, then get some help. Do not forget to include your partner/significant other in these discussions. It’s not just you that will be affected by the work that comes with starting a new business.

Know what your business truly does for people

If you don’t know what your business does, nobody else will either. The first thing you have to do if you are serious about turning a hobby into a business is find its main focus. If you make something and sell it, what is that product exactly? Why should people want to buy it? If you are offering your services in some other way, then what are those services – specifically? Why are you more qualified to dole them out than someone else? I’m just going to sell stuff on the Internet isn’t focused. I’m going to be a life coach sounds nice, but what services are you really offering?

If you are unsure and lack focus, some tried-and-true business ideas include selling hot items such as wireless earphones, phone cases and backpacks for men and women.

Plan before action

Do you have a strategy for one week out? One month out? How about next year? Without a clear plan for business growth, you’re not really starting a business – you’re just charging people for something you do as a hobby. Ask yourself what you want to do, how you’re going to do it, and when you’re going to do it. Time is important. As a post on Forbes suggests, “to ensure your strategies are brought to life, there needs to be specific action plans … and the necessary steps to get you there in an agreed time frame.”

Write out a business plan. Really – write it out.

Think positively

While you can’t simply will success into being you can certainly increase its chances of occurring by harnessing the power of positive thinking. Research has shown that those with a positive outlook in business tend to have more energy, better problem solve, and better bounce back from hardships (resiliency). The good news is that positive thinking can be learned and trained. That positivity will show through to your future clients and customers.

Most importantly, treat your hobby like a real job. If you treat it like a side project, that is all it will ever be. Consult experts in your field. Grow an online presence. Set work hours each day and grind. You really can make money doing what you love, but it won’t come easy.

Put Your Dreams in Motion

Available at Amazon

I’ve made no secret about my desire to write a book.  Well, I’ve been writing and writing, and yesterday, I put my dreams in motion.  I formatted my book for kindle, and I self-published it on Amazon.

I put my dreams in motion and you can put your dreams in motion too.  It’s important to take time to do things for you!  Many people believe that it’s important to put others first, and to put the needs of your family before yours.  Being selfless is good, don’t get me wrong, but every once in a while you have to take time for you and do things for you.  For me, that’s what this book is.  It’s something I did for me, and I’m going to tell you that it feels wonderful.

So don’t ignore the world around you or the people around you, but make sure you take time for yourself.  Put your dreams in motion and live the life you’ve dreamed of.  I can tell you from personal experience that when you do, you feel so much more relaxed and so much happier.  The happiness you feel radiates out from you and encompasses the people that you love.  All that simply because you put your dreams in motion.

Let’s Connect

Hi Everyone – I’m really hoping to start some meaningful conversations around the topic of positive thinking.  I’ve started a facebook group which you can find here to us as a forum for people to talk about positive thinking.  I want to hear what works for people and what doesn’t.  I think we all have a lot to share and we can really help one another.  Watching the news and reading the paper, I see so much negativity in this world, and I want to combat it, with one positive thought at a time.  But I need help.  I need YOUR help.

So why not stop by and share a tip or a trick, or ask a question.

Life Got Crazy for a While

So my week got a little crazy at work, and it spilled over into my out of work life.  When that happens, something has to give (or in my case several somethings) and one of those things was my blog posts for the rest of the week.  I apologize, but as the saying goes, s*** happens.  But looking at the quotes I didn’t get to blog about, I kind of realized that they sum up my week perfectly.  Wednesday was a crazy day with school wide PSAT’s for the sophomores and some of the juniors.  This disrupted the schedule for the rest of the school as well as class placement.  Basically, it was a fly by the seat of your pants kind of day.  We did what we could with what we could with what we had, which wasn’t a lot.  A lot of the crazy spilled over into the next day and a lot of time was spent picking up the pieces of the crazy day before.  For me anyhow, I didn’t believe in the power of anything.  I was hanging on by a thread, but I made it through and figured the next day would be smooth sailing.  Oh how wrong I was.  The next day started with me down in the principal’s office with a student who was supposed to be suicidal the night before.  Thankfully, the reports were incorrect, but those are the kinds of things you don’t leave to chance.  However at the end of the day, it was the same story, different kid, and sadly that report was far more credible.  As an educator, my main goal is to help kids see how awesome that they are, and yet, sadly, we deal with situations like that far too often.  How am I supposed to help a kiddo realize their self-worth when the rest of society, including their family, is telling them they are worthless

We all have something of value to contribute to this world, and our job as parents, and as educators is to help our children and our students realize it.  Our job is not to tear them down and destroy their feelings of self worth.  Anyhow, needless to day, this week kind of killed me inside and there wasn’t a lot energy left over for writing.  What’s incredibly ironic is that I tell my students when they are faced with situations similar to this, when they’re feeling overwhelmed, or that nobody cares, I tell them to write about it.  Journal writing is a big part of my school day.  I tell them if they need to swear to get their point across, do it.  If they don’t want me to read what they wrote start off their journal entry by saying that, and I’ll stop reading.  Journal writing is an amazing way to let your feelings out and to sort through emotions that you are struggling with.  But I didn’t do it.  I forgot to look for the positives in each day and to try and turn things around.  Instead, I chose to wallow in the craziness of my week and it didn’t do me one bit of good.  So while I do know and accept that there will be days when I am just too out straight busy to write, I also know that on the days that are super stressful, I need to write!

Another good lesson I was reminded of this week is that I am NOT perfect.  I screw up, I make mistakes, and sometimes I fall off the positive thinking wagon.  It’s okay.  I’m not supposed to be perfect.  I’m supposed to make mistakes and hopefully learn from them, and the biggest lesson of all is that if and when I do get mired down in the negative thinking, is that it’s okay.  I just have to make sure I don’t stay there.  We can do this.  We don’t have to do it alone, we can do it together, just one day at a time.

A Cool Idea for the New Year

We should all do this

Be a Builder, not a Destroyer

There are two ways of exerting one’s strength: one is pushing down, the other is pulling up – Booker T. Washington

Sorry there were no blog posts last week  – it was a crazy week.  I’m taking two classes this summer and they started Monday (and they’re very challenging, but I’ve got this) and I also started a new online business.  Money made will go toward paying for the Daily Positive Thought mailing list so that we can send out positive thoughts EVERY DAY instead of combining them.  I’ll tell you more about it at the end of this post.

We all have this amazing power inside of us – it’s a power we can apply to ourselves, and to others.  That power is support. Think about a parent with a child, or a teacher with a student, or yourself with your friends.  You are kind, and supportive.  You cheer on their ideas, help, nurture and care.  In short, you are there for them.  Very seldom, if ever I hope, will you hear a teacher say “Johnny, I can’t believe you got it wrong, you are so dumb.”  Nor would you say to your best friend, “Oh, she’ll never like you, you’re nothing but a big fat lump.”

Now think about yourself, how often do you support yourself like that?  Probably never.  That pesky inner voice of ours tends to tear us down, and belittle us.  We use our power for evil on ourselves!  Why?  Why don’t we support ourselves and cheer ourselves on the way we do other people.  Use that strength, that inner power for good and support yourself.  Cheer yourself on!

Ok now on to my new business.  I’m quite excited to become an It Works! independent distributor. The It Works! line consists of beauty/cosmetic products as well as supplements.  It’s all natural, and collageI’m going to be honest, they work GREAT.  One of the best selling products is called the Ultimate Body Applicator, also known as “That Crazy Wrap Thing.”  They are amazing, they diminish the appearance of fat and cellulite.  The Ultimate Body Applicator coupled with the Advanced Formula Fat Fighter and the Ultimate Thermofit have helped many people on their journey to have a more healthy physical body.  I chose to join this company because the products are all natural and they work on the outer body, while my Daily Positive Thought tends to work on the inner 🙂  If you are interested in learning more about this great company or purchasing any of the products, you can message me at wrapswithtj@gmail.com or visit my website www.wrapswithtj.com  Please don’t worry, this website will not be turning into a commercial for my new business.  This is and always will be about positive thinking.  I just wanted to share my new venture with you all.

The Benefits of Yoga and Thinking Positive

Hi Everyone,

I’m looking for opinions here.  As you know, I’m always looking for ways to think positive and improve my mental health.  I am also looking for ways to improve my physical health.  I’ve been looking at yoga as a way to combine these two things.  Do any of you practice yoga, and do you think these two things will work together.  Please share your thoughts, opinions and information in the comment section.  I’d LOVE to hear what you think.

On Being Positive

I love the first of the year.  Facebook is full of bright and shiny resolutions and positive thoughts and posts.  There are positivity groups popping up all over the place.  It’s nice to see.  Really it is.  It will be interesting to re-evaluate in March and see how active those groups are and read the posts of people to see just how positive they are.

I’m not being critical or judgmental.  I really hope that the trends lasts all year and it becomes a habit for everyone.  What I’d like to see, instead of all the cat memes and what decade are you quizzes are positivity memes.

Maybe it’s something we can work on together.

Cool things are Forthcoming!

Hi everybody,

Things have been mighty quiet here on the website portion of Think Positive 30.  I’ve been using this summer to reflect upon a lot of things, and to make some plans.

I’m always looking for ways to bring a smile to my face, because when you’re smiling and happy, you are more positive.  I’m also always thinking of ways I can bring a smile to others for the exact same reason.

Well, I’ve come up with something, and I think it is going to be amazing.  Hopefully you all will think it is amazing as well.  Stay tuned, because once things get put in motion, it’s going to happen fast.
