Choose Happiness

We can choose to be happy or chose to be miserable. Both take the same amount of work. So choose to be happy. We have so many choices to make in our lives. What to wear, what to eat, what to watch, what to drink, what to do - the list goes on and on and on. What we don't really think about is the fact that we have the choice to be happy, or the choice to be miserable. They both take effort, so why would anybody take the time and effort to be miserable? Are crappy things going to happen in your life? Probably. When they do, instead of expending the energy to wallow in your misery, why not take that same amount of energy and work to make yourself feel better?

Some Things Never Change

There are some things that never change, like the fact that you are an incredible and amazing person. In a world full of changes, it's reassuring to know that there are some constants. The sun is always going to rise, and it's always going to rise in the east. The tides will go in and out, and there will always be stars in the sky. We may not see them because there are clouds, but we always know they're there. There is another constant, and this one is the most important of all, but it often goes unnoticed. It's the fact that each one of us is a unique and amazing individual. That is something to recognize and celebrate.

Taking Time to Reflect

I've received lots of messages from people wondering where I've been and why I haven't been posting lately.  Basically, I've been taking time ot reflect  Life is very cyclical - if you are a believer in Tarot cards, there is a card called The Wheel of Fortune and it means that life has it's ups and it's downs.  I guess you could say I've been on a downward turn, and that's what I've been reflecting upon.  At first I was doing the whole woe is me, why is this happening to me thing, but I quickly realized that was an exercise in futility.  From there I moved on to the pondering and reflecting portion of our program, and I'm still there.  I'm trying to figure out not WHY these things are happening, but WHAT I can learn from the things that are happening.  I still don't know what I'm supposed to learn, but I KNOW thre is something I'm supposed to be learning.  Hopefully the meaning shall become clear and the wheel will start on it's upward trend again. I think, this is a healthy attitude to have.  Stuff doesn't always go your way, you can whine about it, or…

Be a Possibilitarian

Become a possibilitarian. No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities - always see them, for they're always there. ~Norman Vincent Peale Originally posted 12/8/09 The world is full of possibilities. Every corner you take, every choice you make exposes you to more possibilities. Think about it, you could take the same route to work every day and stop in the same coffee shop. Some day, for some unknown reason, you stop at a different coffee shop and meet your soul mate. All because you chose a different possibility. There are millions of possibilities out there, waiting for you to chose from them.

It’s Kind of Like the Terminator

Our future is not predetermined. The roadblocks of our past can become the roads that lead us to our future. Every time I read this quote, I'm reminded of the line from the Terminator movie. "We have no fate but that which we make."  We are not bound by our past, or even by our present.  These things may influence who we become, but they do not determine it.  Being born into poverty does not mean you are fated to remain poor all your life.  Nor does it mean you are fated to be wealthy.  It's simply your starting point - a place to begin.  You can use your past as a springboard to bigger and better things, or you can allow it to hold you back.  The choice is yours.

Act on your Positive Thoughts

Act on your positive thoughts. Take your negative thoughts and turn them around and make them positives. It's all in the spin! I know there are some who say that we should always be happy and that we can ensure that good, positive things always happen to us. I'm not to sure about that. I think there needs to be some negatives to help us appreciate the positives that much more. The thing you need to do, though when those negative things happen, is find a way to spin them into positives. Or at the very least, find the bright side of things. It's not always easy, but it's worth it, and in my experience, it makes the negatives a little easier to deal with

Living the Life of Your Dreams

The first step to living the life of your dreams is to imagine you're living the life of your dreams. We all have dreams.  Dreams are good, in fact dreams are great.  They give us something to shoot for.  But how do we live the life our our dreams?  How do we start living on that tropical island, or in in a McMansion - or a full mansion for that matter?  The first step is to imagine yourself living the life of your dreams.  Take a few minutes every day and focus intently on your dreams and goals.  See yourself living in your dream house, or driving your dream car.  See yourself walking through your home, touching all your belongings.  Feel them in your hands.  Focus on them.  That is the first step.  But don't get so caught up in dreaming about the life you want to lead that you forget to live the life you have.  Enjoy the life you have, LOVE IT!  Be grateful for it.  That's the second step.  Do these two things faithfully and soon enough you'll find yourself living the life of your dreams.

The Right Direction

Whatever way you're going, you're headed in the right direction to reach your dream. Your goals are your goals. Your dreams are your dreams. There is no right or wrong way to reach your goals and achieve your dreams. So why is it that everybody seems to know the best way for us to do everything. We start out with our parents teaching us and telling us what to do and how to do it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, because we need to learn. Then we head off to school and we have educators telling us what to do and how to do it. Again, not a bad thing. We are also faced with peer pressure and we often find ourselves doing what everyone else is doing the way they are doing it to fit in. Again, this isn't a terrible thing because a little conformity is not a bad thing. From there, we join the workforce and our bosses are telling us what to do and how to do it. When do we get the opportunity to decide what we want to do and how to do it? It's a challenging question without an easy answer. If…

Just Believe in Yourself

In the words of the immortal Jiminy Cricket "When your heart is in your dreams, no request is to extreme." How can you go wrong when listening to the wise words of Pinocchio's conscience? I mean seriously, he is one very wise insect. When you believe 100% in your dreams, nothing is out of reach. You can accomplish anything you can conceive of as long as you believe in yourself. If we stick with the Disney movie metaphor (and why wouldn't we) we just need to look at Dumbo. He couldn't believe in himself - he had no confidence, and no faith, so Timothy Mouse gave him a "magic feather." That feather gave him a belief in himself and he could fly. Now I realize life isn't a Disney movie, if it were, Prince Charming would have found me by now, but they can teach us a lot of lessons. So listen to Jiminy Cricket and Timothy Mouse and believe in yourself. And if you're having a hard time with that, come see me and I'll get you a magic feather of your very own until you can believe in yourself.

When Thinking Positive isn’t enough

I am a firm believer, obviously, in thinking positive to improve your mood and outlook.  It would, however, be irresponsible of me to say that thinking positive is a fix it for everything.  There are times when you need to talk to a professional.  Depression is a real illness, and like all illnesses, if you are suffering from depression, you should seek the help of a medical professional.  Everybody goes through ups and downs and has mood swings, but when your downs become so overwhelming and consume your life, it is time to seek help.  Some symptoms of depression are: Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation. Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in or ability to enjoy former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month. Sleep changes. Either insomnia, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping (also known as hypersomnia). Psychomotor agitation or retardation. Either feeling “keyed up” and restless or sluggish and physically slowed down. Loss of…
