Being Successful

Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successful men and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.- Conrad Hilton

Everybody makes mistakes. I think if you don’t make mistakes, you’re not doing it right. The mistakes aren’t important in the grand scheme of things. What is important is how you react to those mistakes and how you deal with them. If you get frustrated and give up, you’re not going to succeed. If you get frustrated, but keep trying, you are well on your way to being successful.

When I was much younger, I was an avid skier.  I lived at our local ski area, and I used to consider it a successful day of skiing if I didn’t fall.  Logically, this made sense.  Falling hurt, it was cold, and I got wet.  But I realized that by not falling, I wasn’t improving myself as a skier, I wasn’t trying anything new – I wasn’t being successful.  I’m not talking about taking insane, crazy risks, just pushing myself to learn new, better techniques.  Once I made that realization, I worked harder, learned new things and became a better skier.  Olympic caliber – no, but that’s not what I was working toward.  But I did become a more successful skier.
